Jan. 23rd – Brantley Lake State Park (Carlsbad, New Mexico)

Brantley Lake State Park was a park I was expecting to stay at a few days – I wanted to spend some time in the town of Carlsbad and explore the San Pedro River. But NO! I could only stay one night because of the horrible smell that started as soon as it got dark and carried on through most of the night. I could not sleep. I researched it on the internet and found there are many natural gas wells close by. They burn off the poisonous gases at night. Fracking – ugh!

I did go visit the Carlsbad Caverns. The elevators were under maintenance so it was an opportunity to get a lot of physical hiking in.

Winding path going down into the natural entrance.

Looking back up out of the Caverns.
